Smart Drain, a pioneering stormwater drainage system developed by Urban Inventors, a Sri Lankan startup, has been named one of the ten global winners of the 2025 WIPO Global Awards. The awards, presented by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) — the UN agency dedicated to intellectual property, innovation, and creativity — recognise startups and SMEs that have successfully leveraged intellectual property to generate significant economic and social impact.

Selected from a record 780 applications across 95 countries, the ten awardees were chosen for their innovative solutions in fields such as health, environment, agri-food, the creative industries, and ICT. Smart Drain was recognised for its patented solution to urban flooding, a growing challenge in densely populated areas.

Unlike conventional systems that often fail when blocked by debris, the Smart Drain system is designed to allow continuous water flow even when drains are clogged with waste. Its unique structure filters out solid materials while ensuring effective drainage, offering a scalable, climate-resilient solution for municipalities and city planners. The innovation is protected by both design and utility patents.

The awards ceremony took place on 11 July during the annual WIPO Assemblies in Geneva. WIPO Director General Daren Tang presented trophies to the ten global winners, along with two special recognitions for Best Woman Entrepreneur and Best Youth Entrepreneur. During the event, the awardees also had the opportunity to share their key business needs with decision-makers, contributing to ongoing discussions on optimising global IP commercialisation frameworks.

The Smart Drain team comprises Dr Nadeesha Chandrasena (founder and inventor), Sujeewa Kokawala (co-inventor), Lahiru Prasanga (drainage engineer), Sahan Ranasinghe (IoT and technology partner), Madusha Namudara (design engineer), Deon Joshua (citizen science and data innovation associate), Thisura Senarath (chief design officer), Dr Clarence Tan (strategic advisor), and Darshana Wimukthi (design officer).
