The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the release of former SriLankan Airlines Chairman Anthony Nishantha Wickramasinghe on bail. He was earlier remanded after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on 27 June over a charge of corruption.
The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali Jayathunga after considering submissions made by the Bribery Commission and legal representatives of Nishantha Wickramasinghe.
The court granted bail under a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three personal sureties of Rs. 5 million each. In addition, the Magistrate imposed a travel ban on Wickramasinghe, prohibiting him from leaving the country.
An officer representing CIABOC told the court that most of the investigations related to the incident have now been completed. Accordingly, the officer requested the court to issue an appropriate order based on its discretion.
After reviewing all submissions, the Magistrate delivered the bail order and directed that the case be taken up again on 14 October.
The Bribery Commission further informed the court that investigations are being conducted against the suspect in connection with three separate corruption-related charges.
