Cabinet approval has been granted to implement a new project from this year allowing Sri Lankan nationals to apply for passports online through Sri Lankan diplomatic missions abroad.

The proposal aims to streamline and expedite the process of applying for Sri Lankan passports via Sri Lankan missions overseas. To support this initiative, a proposal has been submitted to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist in digitising the process.

Accordingly, the IOM has agreed to provide the necessary funding for a project covering 20 diplomatic missions. The project includes the establishment of biometric enrolment centres and provision of related equipment, enabling online connectivity with the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and the development of integrated systems/software and technical support.

The goal of the initiative is to provide overseas Sri Lankans with fast and convenient access to passport services through digital technology.

As such, the project to implement the online Sri Lankan passport application system through 20 identified Sri Lankan missions abroad will be launched this year, following approval of the joint proposal submitted by the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment and the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs.
