The Supreme Court ordered that the special leave to appeal petition filed by the AG against a Appeal Court decision on case against Janaka Bandara Tennakoon be taken up for hearing on 3 September.

The petition seeks an order to invalidate the decision of the Court of Appeal that quashed the indictment filed before the Kandy High Court against former Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, in 2020. The indictment relates to the alleged shooting and killing of an 18-year-old youth in Matale in 1999. Tennakoon was charged with committing and conspiring to commit murder.

The former minister had earlier filed a writ petition before the Court of Appeal, arguing that the indictment against him was unlawful.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Janak de Silva, Mahinda Samayawardhena, and Sobitha Rajakaruna convened yesterday (14) to consider the petition.

Appearing on behalf of Tennakoon, President’s Counsel Navin Marapana informed the court that his client is currently unwell and is experiencing difficulty even walking.

In response, Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara, appearing for the Attorney General, requested another date to confirm facts related to the petition.

Accordingly, the Supreme Court ordered the case to be taken up again on 3 September for further consideration.
