The Supreme Court today (27) directed that fresh notices be issued to the respondents named in the petitions filed by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa and others, seeking a ruling to nullify the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sri Lanka and India on the implementation of a digital identity project for Sri Lankan citizens.

The petitions were taken up before a bench comprising Chief Justice Priyasath Dep, Justices Kumuduni Wickramasinghe, and Sampath Wijayaratne.

Appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, Solicitor General Viraj Dayaratne informed Court that the Cabinet Ministers and other respondents named in the petitions had not yet been served with notices.

Meanwhile, Attorney-at-Law Kanishka Witharana, appearing for one of the petitioners, requested that an early date be fixed for consideration of the matter.

Accordingly, the bench ordered the petitioners’ legal counsel to ensure that fresh notices are served on Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, who is among the respondents, along with the other Cabinet Ministers and relevant officials.

The petitions are scheduled to be taken up again on 17 October. (Courtesy: BBC Sinhala)
