A milestone in the modernisation of Sri Lanka’s railway network was marked today with the laying of the foundation stone for the expansion of Talpe Railway Station, under the “Dream Destination” project.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways, Prasanna Gunasena, attended the ceremony as the chief guest, joined by Deputy Minister Rathna Gamage, Parliamentarian Nishantha Samaraweera, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, Gunasena described the railway service as a “sleeping giant,” drawing a parallel with Gulliver in Gulliver’s Travels, and noted that steps are now being taken to awaken it. He emphasised that the Talpe station expansion is an important first step in this transformation.
The “Dream Destination” project, spearheaded by Clean Sri Lanka, aims to modernise 100 railway stations across the country. Several private institutions are partnering in the initiative, including an engineering firm providing key technical expertise.
The Deputy Minister further highlighted that upcoming national development projects, set to commence within the next two to three months, will help turn the entire country into a bustling workspace within the next four years.
