The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has completed its preliminary investigations into the 9 May 2022 attack on protesters at Galle Face and has forwarded its findings to the Attorney General for further advice on legal action against the suspects.

A total of 37 individuals, including former MPs Johnston Fernando and Milan Jayathilake as well as former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, have been named as suspects in the case.

When the matter was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pavithra Sanjeewani Pathirana, the CID informed Court that they are still awaiting the Attorney General’s response.

Magistrate Pathirana subsequently directed the Attorney General to expedite his advice regarding the incident.

The case will be called again on 21 January next year for further magisterial inquiry.
