The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the construction of a new three-storey building for the primary section of Kurunegala Maliyadeva College, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in the district.

Established in 1888, Maliyadeva College currently has 4,617 students. The primary section is presently conducted in three single-storey, tile-roofed buildings that are decades old and no longer adequate to meet the needs of students.

Recognising the need for a modern, child-friendly learning environment, plans have been finalised for a three-storey building consisting of 24 classrooms, an activity room, and three teachers’ restrooms with sanitary facilities on each floor.

The project, which is part of the national investment plan for 2026–2030, will be implemented during the 2026–2028 period at an estimated cost of Rs. 392 million.

The proposal was presented by the Prime Minister in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education.
