The Supreme Court today (7 October) dismissed an appeal filed by G. G. Amarasiri, also known as ‘Julampitiya Amare’, who had been sentenced to death for a brutal murder case in Katuwana.
The appeal, which sought to overturn the death penalty imposed by the Tangalle High Court, was rejected without examination, effectively upholding the earlier ruling.
Amare was convicted in connection with a violent incident that occurred in 2012 during a People’s Liberation Front (Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna) gathering in Katuwana, where he shot and killed two individuals and caused fatal injuries to another.
The Tangalle High Court had previously sentenced him to death for his role in the killings, and the Supreme Court today confirmed that judgment.
