The police constable involved in the alleged assault with a lawyer at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court on Friday (10) has been granted bail.
Police Sergeant (Legal Officer) Sithara Sanjaya and Police Constable (Legal Officer) Chathuranga Sandaruwan appeared today (13) on behalf of the constable when the case was taken up before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
Both Sanjaya and Sandaruwan are serving officers of the Sri Lanka Police, currently on five-year unpaid leave to practise law full-time.
The case relates to an incident in which a lawyer was allegedly assaulted by a police officer during an attempt to move the lawyer’s car from the court premises. A video circulating on social media shows the assaulted lawyer, accompanied by another senior attorney, verbally abusing the police constable involved in the incident.
