Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has criticised the government’s decision to hold a large public ceremony to hand over home ownership licences for estate housing to the Malaiyaha Tamil community, claiming that previous administrations had simply sent such documents by post.
Speaking to the media in Welimada after a political meeting yesterday (12), Rajapaksa said that neither the current government nor the previous one had built new houses for estate residents.
“The truth is, neither of these governments built houses. They are only distributing home ownership licences. Until now, these licences were sent through the post. But today, the President is holding a grand ceremony to hand them over. That means they are even celebrating the act of giving people letters confirming they might get a house one day. The whole system has completely changed,” Rajapaksa remarked.
He further claimed that while people had once received confirmation of land ownership quietly by mail, the current administration was turning it into a showpiece event, despite not actually providing new houses.
