A woman is suing a psychiatric ward after claiming she was diagnosed as being delusional because she told doctors Obama follows her on Twitter, according to a suit filed at Manhattan Federal court.
Kam Brock, from Long Island, claims she suffered an eight day ordeal at the facility during which she was wrongly told she has bipolar disorder and made to attend group therapy.
The Jamaican-born 32-year-old was also given forced injections and powerful sedatives during the incident, according to her lawyer Michael Lamsoff.
The New York Daily News reported that Ms Brock had to “state that Obama was not following her on Twitter” in order to be released from Harlem Hospital.
However, the official twitter account for the President of the United States @BarackObama, which follows 644,000 users, does appear to be following her account, @AkilahBrock.
Ms Brock told the New York daily News that she mentioned her famous follower to doctors as an example of her good character.
“I told (the doctor) Obama follows me on Twitter to show her the type of person I am. I’m a good person, a positive person. Obama follows positive people!” she said.
The ordeal began in September of last year, when Mr Brock went to pick up her car which had been seized by the NYPD because they believed she was high on marijuana. No drugs were found but her BMW was seized.
She said she was “emotional” but not “emotionally disturbed” at the time.
Nevertheless, she was put in handcuffed and taken to the hospital.
“Next thing you know, the police held onto me, the doctor stuck me with a needle and I was knocked out.
“I woke up to them taking off my underwear and then went out again. I woke up the next day in a hospital robe,” she said.
The NYPD and Harlem hospital have declined to comment on the case.
Meanwhile, Ms Brock launched the hashtag #IMNOTCRAZY while thanking her more sympathetic twitter followers for their support.
