Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket after the third Test against Australia in Brisbane.

The 38-year-old took 537 wickets in 106 Tests at an average of 24.00, placing him seventh on the all-time list and second only to Anil Kumble (619) for his country.

He has also played in 116 ODIs and 65 T20 Internationals.

“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level,” he said at the post-match press conference alongside captain Rohit Sharma.

“I feel there’s a little bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I would like to express it, showcase it in club-level cricket.”

He was not selected in the Brisbane squad heading into his final Test in Adelaide last week. There he took 1-53.

“Obviously there are a lot of people to thank, but I will be failing in my duties if I didn’t thank the BCCI and the fellow team mates.”

Ashwin made his Test debut against the West Indies in 2011 and scored 3503 runs with 6 centuries and 14 fifties with the bat as well
