The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has temporarily called off the island-wide strike that was scheduled to begin at 8.00 a.m. today (31).
In a statement, the GMOA said the decision followed agreements reached during a special discussion held last night (30) with Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Director General of Health Services, and GMOA representatives.
The association stated that the Health Ministry had agreed to suspend the controversial doctor transfers that were to be implemented in violation of the accepted methodology, and to carry out transfers instead within a specified timeframe following proper procedures.
These agreements are expected to be confirmed during a special meeting with the Ministry’s administrative doctors scheduled for today.
Considering the agreements reached, the GMOA’s Executive Council decided to extend the suspension of the strike until 12 noon today, pending written confirmation of the decisions made.
The GMOA also warned that if the agreements are not implemented as promised, the strike action will resume at any time.
