Over 350 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’) and heroin, valued at approximately Rs. 5 billion, were seized from a multi-day fishing trawler, Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) confirmed.
Six suspects were arrested after the Sri Lanka Navy intercepted the vessel in deep seas off the country’s western coast and brought it to the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour this morning (2 November).
According to reports, 16 bags containing the narcotics were discovered onboard. The operation was conducted following credible intelligence received by the Navy about a large consignment of drugs being smuggled by sea.
Long-range naval assets were deployed to intercept the vessel, leading to the successful seizure and arrest of those involved.
