Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam has accused the current administration of deliberately creating national crises, including issues related to narcotics and organised crime, in order to later portray itself as having solved them.

He alleged that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is attempting to manufacture crises such as the drug menace and the underworld problem to appear as a “hero” in the eyes of the public, thereby diverting attention from unfulfilled promises.

Kariyawasam claimed that the President seems to “create a problem, solve it himself, and then seek public praise for doing so.”

According to him, the most prominent issues that appear to have been artificially created under the present administration are the rapid spread of narcotics and the escalation of underworld-related violence.

Commenting on the drug situation, the SLPP General Secretary questioned how such large quantities of narcotics have entered the country in recent months. He expressed concern over reports that “red-label containers” were being released from Customs without proper inspection, suggesting that this may have contributed to the surge in drug trafficking.

He further demanded that the government explain to the public how such quantities of narcotics were allowed into Sri Lanka.

Referring to the rise in underworld activities, Kariyawasam said that the current wave of shootings and gang-related incidents was unprecedented under previous administrations. He alleged that the “underworld crisis” had been created under the watch of the present government.

Kariyawasam charged that the President is now attempting to suppress the very crises that emerged during his own administration, in an apparent effort to gain public approval.

He further claimed that this approach is aimed at distracting citizens from the promises the President had made but failed to deliver.

However, Kariyawasam warned that while such tactics might deceive the President’s “servile supporters,” the broader public would not be misled.
