Two Arrested for Beating Dog to Death in Viral Video

Two individuals have been arrested following the circulation of a video on social media showing a dog being brutally beaten with a stick by two men.

The dog’s owner lodged a complaint with the Akmeemana Police Station on 18 December 2024, stating that her dog was attacked by two individuals on 11 December 2024. The dog succumbed to its injuries as a result of the assault.

In response, officers from the Akmeemana Police Station launched an investigation and arrested the two suspects, along with the three-wheeler seen in the video, on 18 December 2024.

The suspects, aged 34 and 37, are residents of Bataduwa.

This act is a violation of Section 2 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance No. 13 of 1907, which prohibits acts of cruelty, such as assaulting, abusing, neglecting, or causing unnecessary pain to animals.

The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court today (19 December 2024).
