Officers from the Tourist Police Division today (17) arrested a tuk-tuk driver who was filmed committing an obscene act towards foreign tourists.

The arrest follows the circulation of a video on social media showing the suspect performing the indecent act while driving alongside a tuk-tuk carrying a group of female tourists.

The Tourist Police confirmed the incident occurred on the 4th of this month on the Kurunegala-Paragahadeniya-Mawatagama road. The victims were identified as two women from the Netherlands.

According to the Acting Director of the Tourist Police Division, authorities tracked the tourists to their hotel in Haputale, where officers visited them to record an official complaint.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had also traveled to the Kandy-Katugastota area on the day of the incident. Officers were dispatched to that area yesterday (16) to review security camera footage to trace his movements.

Through the investigation, the suspect was identified as a resident of Mawatagama, Kurunegala. When two police teams arrived at the suspect’s home yesterday afternoon to make the arrest, they discovered he had already fled.

However, a continued search led to the suspect’s successful apprehension by the Tourist Police today.
