Responding to media queries regarding the latest reports about his academic qualifications, Namal Rajapaksa said the claims being circulated are “completely false.”

He said the current government, within weeks of coming into power, had submitted a B-report to court seeking approval to launch an investigation into his degree, and that several months of inquiries have since taken place. However, no findings or updates have been officially reported to the court so far.

“They’ve been investigating for months. But to this day, nothing has been submitted to court. Yet websites are slinging mud at me. They’re now scared of the Nugegoda rally. They’re spreading lies and fake propaganda. All these accusations will be answered on the 21st,” Rajapaksa told reporters.

He added that the public will be able to witness a clear response to these “false allegations” at the Nugegoda rally.

However, according to an investigative article published on The Examiner written by Nirmala Kannangara and published on 18 November 2025 regarding MP Namal Rajapaksa’s admission to the Sri Lanka Law College in 2009, there are many irregularities in the process.

Key points from the article:

  • Admission Irregularities: The article alleges that Namal Rajapaksa did not meet the necessary requirements for admission to Law College but was admitted regardless. He entered via a route for those with foreign law degrees, bypassing the entrance exam.
  • Unrecognized University: At the time of his admission (September 25, 2009), his degree-awarding institution, City University London, was reportedly not recognized by the Sri Lanka Law College. Recognition was only granted 20 days later.
  • Missing Certificate: The investigation found that his file at the Law College does not contain a degree certificate, which is a mandatory document. It only contains a transcript and a letter from the university.
  • Insufficient Class: Even if the degree were accepted, the article states his “Class Three” degree would not have been sufficient for admission to the Bar in the UK (which requires a Lower Second Class/2ii or higher). Consequently, it should not have been valid for exemption from the Sri Lankan entrance exam under the rules at the time.
  • Discrepancies in Documents: The article highlights inconsistencies between documents submitted to Law College and those submitted later to the University of Sri Jayewardenepura for a Master’s. For instance, a degree certificate submitted to the latter was signed by a Vice-Chancellor who had reportedly already resigned by that date.
  • Current Investigation: The Principal of the Law College, Prasantha Lal De Alwis PC, mentioned that the CID is currently conducting an investigation into Rajapaksa’s qualifications.
