The Attorney General has instructed the Police to arrest Ampitiye Sumana Thera in connection with a case filed under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act.
The complaint was initially lodged by Attorney-at-Law Dhanuka Rananjaka Kahandagama on 23 October 2023, citing a statement made by Ampitiye Sumana Thera in Batticaloa. The case is currently before the Batticaloa Magistrate’s Court under Case No. 1152, with the next hearing scheduled for 8 December 2025.
Lawyer Kahandagamage said the Attorney General issued the directive after forwarding a controversial video clip—purportedly showing Sumana Thera making an aggressive remark against Tamil community—to the Government Analyst for examination. This was in relation to a threat made in Batticaloa, where he stated in the presence of several police officers, “Every Tamil person living in the South will be cut and killed.”
