The rescue mission to save passengers stranded by floodwaters at the Kala Oya Bridge along the Anuradhapura–Puttalam road has been successfully completed, with 68 people brought to safety, the Navy Spokesperson confirmed. One individual has died after admitting to the hospital.
The group was initially trapped in a bus that was swept by rising floodwaters and later took shelter on the roof of a nearby residence after rescue attempts on 28 November were hindered by severe weather.
The Sri Lanka Navy mobilised multiple specialised units, including the Active Craft Squadron, the Navy Diving Unit and the Special Boat Squadron (SBS), for the rescue operation.
The final phase of the mission was completed this morning (29), despite challenging conditions caused by continuous heavy rain. According to the Navy Spokesperson, all survivors have now been safely evacuated and are receiving the necessary care.
