The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall.

According to the advisory, issued at 7:30 a.m. today (9), the Northern, Eastern, and North Central provinces are under a rain warning valid for 24 hours, until 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.

The Department urged residents in these provinces to remain vigilant due to the expected adverse conditions.

It noted that the North-East monsoon is gradually establishing over the island, which may result in occasional showers or thunderstorms in the Northern, North Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces.

Some areas in the Northern, Eastern, and North Central provinces could experience heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm, the advisory added.

The Department further cautioned the public to take necessary precautions to minimise risks associated with strong winds and lightning that may accompany heavy showers.
