The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) announced on 10 December 2025 that the corruption case filed against former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has been conditionally withdrawn.

The case, heard in the Colombo High Court, relates to alleged corruption concerning investments in Greek Bonds in 2011. The Commission stated that the indictment against Cabraal was withdrawn following a request made by the accused under Section 67(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act.

Upon considering the request, the Director General of the Commission, with the approval of the Commission under Section 67(3) of the Act, agreed to withdraw the charges subject to a strict financial condition.

Cabraal is required to pay Rs. 1,843,267,595.65 (One billion, eight hundred and forty-three million, two hundred and sixty-seven thousand, five hundred and ninety-five rupees and sixty-five cents) as compensation for the loss incurred. This payment must be deposited into a designated account at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka within three months from today (10).

The Commission warned that if the payment is not made within the stipulated three-month period, legal action will be reinstated against Cabraal under Section 67(5) of the Anti-Corruption Act.

The Commission also noted that the indictments against the other four individuals accused in the same case were withdrawn under Section 194(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code. Consequently, the High Court has released these individuals.

In its statement, the media unit of the Commission clarified that earlier media reports suggesting all accused had been fully acquitted were incorrect. The Commission emphasised that the withdrawal regarding the first accused, Cabraal, is strictly conditional upon the payment of the compensation.
