A police team has been dispatched to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka to arrest National People’s Power (NPP) MP Asoka Ranwala, who is currently receiving treatment following a road accident in Sapugaskanda on 11 December, Sapugaskanda Police have said to BBC Sinhala.

BBC Sinhala reported that a police officer said the accident occurred at around 7.45 p.m. yesterday (11) when the jeep driven by the MP collided with a motor car at the Dandimulla Junction in Sapugaskanda.

Three people travelling in the car, including a young child, sustained injuries. The child has been admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.

The other two injured persons, along with Asoka Ranwala were initially admitted to the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital and later transferred to the National Hospital for further treatment, police said.

When contacted by BBC Sinhala, Sapugaskanda Police were asked whether the MP had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Police said this would be examined once he is taken into custody.
