The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that steps are being taken to file indictments Piumi Hansamali, over the alleged evasion of Rs. 225 million in taxes payable to the State.
Accordingly, the indictments will be file before the Colombo High Court.
Appearing on behalf of the IRD, Attorney Dinesh Perera told court on Monday (15) that the department has sought the Attorney General’s instructions to proceed with filing indictments against Piumi Hansamali.
Hansamali, who is also the owner of a company engaged in the sale of skin-whitening cosmetic products, is alleged to have failed to remit the said tax amount. She is named as the respondent in the case before the High Court.
The matter was taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate as part of preliminary legal proceedings connected to the proposed indictments.
