Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the killing of a wild elephant named “Ambabo” in Ambagahawela junction, Seeppukulama in Mihintale, authorities said.
The elephant, which had been in a critically ill condition, was allegedly set on fire using flaming torches by a group of individuals. A video circulating on social media showed the injured animal being attacked at night while it was lying helpless, suffering from gunshot injuries to its front leg and unable to feed.
Wildlife officers said the elephant had been severely wounded after being shot and had collapsed in a critical condition. Despite several days of treatment by wildlife officials, the elephant succumbed to its injuries. Final rites were conducted today.
Investigations into the incident are continuing, and the arrests were made as part of efforts to hold those responsible accountable for the killing of the protected animal.
