The Inspector General of Police has ordered a disciplinary investigation into alleged negligence of duty by senior officers attached to the Sapugaskanda Police Station, including the Officer-in-Charge and the Traffic OIC, in connection with the investigation into a road accident involving National People’s Power MP Ashoka Ranwala.
According to the Police Media Division, lapses by senior officers were observed during initial inquiries into the incident. As a result, the Police Special Investigation Division has been directed to conduct a formal disciplinary probe.
The accident occurred on 11 December at about 7.30 p.m. in Denimalla, Sapugaskanda, when a jeep driven by Ranwala was involved in a head-on collision with a motor car.
Police said a 25-year-old woman, her seven-month-old infant, and the woman’s 55-year-old mother, who were travelling in the car, sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital for treatment.
Further investigations into the accident and the conduct of the officers concerned are ongoing.
