The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued “Level 3” Red evacuation warnings for eight Divisional Secretariat divisions in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts following intense rainfall. According to the NBRO, the Udadumbara area in the Kandy district has recorded a significant rainfall exceeding 200 mm.
The evacuation warnings apply to Doluwa, Udadumbara, Medadumbara, and Minipe in the Kandy district, as well as Walapane, Hanguranketha, Nildandahinna, and Maturata in the Nuwara Eliya district. Geologist Wasantha Senadheera stated that these areas are at a high risk of landslides, particularly in locations already showing preliminary signs of slope instability.
The NBRO has urged residents in the affected regions to avoid unnecessary travel and prioritise their safety. Residents are specifically advised to remain vigilant for early warning signs of landslides, such as new cracks in buildings or the ground, and to evacuate immediately if such signs appear.
Wasantha Senadheera further cautioned that previously affected sites are susceptible to further landslides or embankment collapses due to the prevailing weather conditions. The public is advised to stay away from high-risk structures and slopes until the weather stabilises and the threat subsides.
