The Police Spokesman said that no traces of alcohol were found in the blood and urine samples of former Speaker and National People’s Power Parliamentarian Asoka Ranwala.
The Government Analyst’s Department conducted the tests on samples obtained following a road traffic accident on 11 December. This medical assessment was initially requested by the Police to determine if any of the drivers involved in the collision were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The accident took place in the Denimulla area of Sapugaskanda when the jeep carrying the former Speaker collided with a car. Three passengers in the car—a 25-year-old woman, her six-month-old infant, and her 55-year-old mother—sustained injuries and required hospital treatment. On 12 December, while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, Asoka Ranwala was taken into custody on charges of dangerous driving and failing to prevent an accident.
Although he was granted cash bail of Rs. 200,000 by the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on the day of his arrest, the legal process remains ongoing. The case is set to be recalled before the Mahara Magistrate’s Court on 16 January 2026.
