A video showing two police officers questioning an app-based taxi driver over a long-distance trip from Negombo to Ella has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism.

In the video, the officers are heard questioning the driver about why he accepted a trip of such distance. They also claim that when app-based taxi drivers operate in the area, it affects the livelihoods of local taxi drivers, and warn against taking on new hires in the area.

The conduct of the officers has drawn strong criticism online, with many users questioning the legal authority of the police to interrogate app-based taxi drivers over trips accepted through digital platforms. Commentators have argued that such actions could further empower so-called “taxi mafias” in major tourist destinations, where unregulated operators are often accused of charging tourists exorbitant fares.

Several social media users have also raised concerns that the incident sends a negative signal to tourists and app-based transport services, which are widely relied upon for transparent pricing and convenience, particularly in tourist areas.

No official statement has yet been issued by the Police regarding the incident.
