The Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist Chapters have formally requested President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to declare 30 May 2026 as the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day. The request follows a discrepancy in the current calendar for 2026, which sees two Poya days occurring within the month of May.

According to the calendar currently issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, 01 May 2026 is designated as the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day, while 30 May 2026 is listed as the Adhi Poson Full Moon Poya Day.

The Mahanayaka Theros noted in their letter that a significant debate has arisen within society regarding the 01 May date. They pointed out that the ‘visā nakatha’, an astrological requirement essential for the recognition of Vesak, does not fall on the first of the month.

The decision to seek a revision was reached following extensive consultations with the Sangha Sabhas and expert astrologers. Under the guidance of the Chief Prelates, it was concluded that 30 May 2026, which coincides with the ‘visā nakatha’, should be observed as the official Vesak Full Moon Poya Day to remain in accordance with ancient Buddha Shasana traditions.

The letter further urged the President to officially declare the change and to instruct state officials to conduct all relevant religious observances and state ceremonies on the revised date.
