The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), controlled by the National People’s Power (NPP), has passed its 2026 budget at the second reading by a margin of two votes.

Accordingly, 58 councillors voted in favour of the budget, while 56 voted against it.

The inaugural budget of the Colombo Municipal Council was first presented to the council on 22 December, but was defeated at the initial vote. At that time, 60 votes were cast against the budget, while only 57 votes were in favour.

Against this backdrop, the budget was re-presented to the council today by Mayor Vraiee Kelly Balthazar.

At the second vote held today (31), the Colombo Municipal Council’s 2026 budget was approved by a simple majority.
