The Chief Prelate of the Mihintale Rajamaha Viharaya, Ven. Walawahangunawewe Dhammarathana Thera, has voiced strong criticism against the National People’s Power (NPP) government, claiming that their national policy statement, ‘Rich Country, a Beautiful Life,’ was drafted in Pelawatte to suit the agendas of various interested parties.
He asserted that the field of education is not a domain that should be shaped according to the whims of such groups, emphasizing that the integrity of the school system must be protected from outside influences.
These remarks were made in response to a controversy surrounding the newly introduced Grade 6 English language module. It has been reported that an error appears in three places within the module, where a link of a website associated with the gay community was included. Dhammarathana Thera described the inclusion of such content in a textbook for young children as a form of child abuse and a direct threat to the country’s student population.
During his statement, he alleged that the current administration possesses a mindset that is harmful to traditional values.
He stressed that the severity of the textbook error warrants the arrest of the President and all 160 members of the current Parliament. The Thera urged the public to consider whether the government they elected is truly acting in the best interests of the country’s youth.
