Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya says the government is committed to safeguarding children’s education while modernising Sri Lanka’s education system through reforms aligned with new technology, the digital world, and artificial intelligence.

She made these remarks yesterday (8) during meetings with the Most Venerable Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters of the Siam Nikaya, held in connection with the proposed new education reforms.

The Prime Minister first visited the Malwatte Maha Vihara, where she met the Most Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter. She later called on the Most Venerable Warakagoda Gnanarathana Thera, the Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter, at the Asgiriya Maha Vihara, where she explained the proposed reforms.

Amarasuriya said that under the new reforms, 106 textbooks for Grade Six have already been printed, with printing for the second and third school terms to be completed in due course. She added that the government would intervene whenever weaknesses arise within the education system and take all possible steps to address shortcomings.

Noting that Sri Lanka’s school curriculum has not been updated for nearly a decade, she said the government would adopt a flexible policy approach to correct existing deficiencies and ensure children receive a more reliable and credible education.
She further said that despite challenges, the new government was working to elevate education standards as part of broader political and social change, adding that independent investigations were under way through several institutions into issues related to the textbook printing process.

Kandy District MPs Thanura Dissanayake and Thushari Jayasinghe, Kandy Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayake, and several others were present.
