Road Accidents Claim 13 Lives in 24 Hours, Annual Toll Surpasses 2,200

In the past 24 hours, 13 individuals have lost their lives in 10 separate road accidents reported from various parts of Sri Lanka, the Police said.

The incidents occurred in Hatton, Pinnaduwa, Marawila, Ambalantota, Gampola, Hettipola, Batticaloa, Mirihana, Kabithigollawa, and Seeduwa. Among the deceased, four were pedestrians.

Senior Superintendent of Police Buddhika Manatunga has urged the public to exercise caution during the festive season due to increased road traffic.
“With the arrival of the festive season, there is noticeably more traffic on highways and greater movement of pedestrians. Pedestrians must be vigilant while walking, and drivers should exercise utmost care while driving,” he stated.

Road Accident Statistics for 2024

The police revealed alarming figures for road accidents in Sri Lanka this year:

  • Deaths: 2,243 fatalities reported so far in 2024.
  • Accidents: A total of 22,967 road accidents occurred between 1 January and 13 December, with 2,141 of these being fatal.
  • Injuries: 4,552 individuals sustained serious injuries during this period.
