A Sri Lankan national has been arrested in Israel in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a schoolgirl enrolled at a special needs school, Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Israel confirmed.
The Embassy said it had been informed by the Interpol Branch of the Israeli Police that the suspect was taken into custody by the Beit Shemesh Police Station and is currently being detained for further investigations.
According to information received by the Embassy, the individual had arrived in Israel in May 2025 for employment purposes and had subsequently engaged in temporary work outside his original employment sector.
Israeli authorities are investigating the suspect in relation to allegations involving the abuse of a minor with special needs. No further details have been released at this stage, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
In a statement, the Embassy stressed that Israel enforces strict criminal and social conduct laws, noting that individuals found guilty of serious offences face severe legal consequences, including long-term imprisonment. Foreign nationals convicted of such offences are subject to deportation upon completion of their sentences.
The Embassy also issued a strong reminder to all Sri Lankan nationals residing and working in Israel to strictly comply with the laws, regulations, and social norms of the host country at all times. It cautioned that violations of Israeli law — whether committed before or after arrival — have previously resulted in imprisonment and other serious legal consequences.
Sri Lankan nationals were urged to conduct themselves responsibly and lawfully, with the Embassy emphasising that unlawful behaviour not only affects the individual concerned but may also have broader implications for the Sri Lankan community in Israel.
