Six suspects, including the son of popular model Piumi Hansamali, who were arrested in connection with an alleged assault on a three-wheeler driver following a road accident in Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya, were ordered to be remanded until 16 February by Colombo Additional Magistrate Nuwan Kaushalya yesterday (11).
The suspects were produced before court by the Welikada Police under security. The Magistrate ordered that they be remanded pending an identification parade.
Police informed court that the incident stems from a road accident that occurred several months ago, when a friend of the model’s son was travelling on a motorcycle through the Rajagiriya area and collided with a three-wheeler.
According to preliminary investigations, a group of individuals had arrived at the scene following the accident and allegedly assaulted the three-wheeler driver using a shovel.
The injured driver was admitted to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for treatment, court was told.
The suspects were arrested based on a complaint lodged with the Welikada Police by the three-wheeler driver.
Counsel appearing for the suspects requested court to refrain from conducting an identification parade and to grant bail, arguing that the incident had taken place nearly three months ago and that photographs of the suspects had already been circulated on social media.
Having considered submissions made by both the Police and defence counsel, the Magistrate ordered that the suspects be remanded until they are produced for an identification parade.
