General Secretary of the Sinhaladeepa National Front Jayantha Liyanage, said that a request had been made to the Mayor of Brampton, Patrick Brown, seeking the removal of the Tamil Genocide Monument constructed in the city of Brampton, Canada.

Liyanage stated that the memorial, which refers to alleged war crimes, had been erected based on what he described as false allegations against Sri Lanka’s Tri-Forces. He said that this position had been conveyed to the Mayor in a letter addressed to him.

According to Liyanage, the request was sent via email and the Mayor had responded, acknowledging receipt of the letter and informing him that the decision of the Canadian Government on the matter would be communicated in due course.

Meanwhile, he further stated that a silent protest would be staged on 19 February in front of the Canadian High Commission in Sri Lanka, urging the immediate removal of the memorial.

Liyanage alleged that the monument constituted an insult to Sri Lanka’s war heroes and said that the protest had been organised to demand its removal without delay.
