Two suspects arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the shooting of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife in Akuregoda, Thalangama, were today (17) ordered to be detained in police custody until tomorrow (18) for further questioning.

Kaduwela Magistrate Arun Indrajith Buddhadasa issued the order after the suspects were produced before court by the Western Province South Crimes Division. Investigators sought a 48-hour detention order to question the suspects in connection with the double murder.

A group of nearly 100 lawyers appeared before court representing the aggrieved party, led by President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsecularatne and Bar Association President Rajeev Amarasuriya.

No counsel appeared on behalf of the suspects.

Tight security was deployed in and around the court premises when the suspects were brought before the Magistrate for the hearing.
