Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament yesterday (20) that one of the two gunmen involved in the fatal shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, along with the driver who transported them to the lodge where they had been staying, has been identified.

Providing an update on the investigation, the Minister said authorities have initiated the necessary steps to apprehend all individuals connected to the crime.

The vehicle allegedly used in the shooting was later found torched in the Baddegama area. Police have also recovered another vehicle in Kottawa believed to have been used to deliver the firearms. Investigations are continuing to trace the vehicle that transported the gunmen to their lodging prior to the attack. Its registered owner has now been identified.

According to the Minister, the suspect who allegedly opened fire using a revolver has been identified as Robert Suresh, a resident of Pansala Road, Meewala, Rukgahawila. Extensive operations are under way to arrest him.

He further stated that the vehicle used to transport the suspects to their lodging is registered to Wanniarchchige Sihina Dilsara, of ‘Rasika Niwasa,’ Old Colony, Athkandura, Galle. Police are continuing investigations to apprehend the suspect and recover the relevant vehicle.
