Ven. Akmeemana Dayaratana Thera has lodged a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (24) over alleged defamatory and threatening statements made by Rajangane Saddharatana Thera on social media.

Speaking to the media after submitting the complaint, Dayaratana Thera alleged that the remarks were made in response to a recent press conference conducted by him and several others. He claimed that Saddharatana Thera had used highly offensive and defamatory language in publicly criticising them.

Dayaratana Thera further stated that such conduct contributes to the erosion of monastic discipline and Buddhist cultural values. He also alleged that the current Government is implementing a strategic programme aimed at undermining the Sasana by utilising certain members of the clergy.

He accused Saddharatana Thera of making controversial statements on social media to increase viewership and generate income, claiming that political backing may be involved.

Emphasising that even senior prelates have allegedly been subjected to disrespect, Dayaratana Thera called for the immediate enforcement of the law against such conduct. He noted that matters relating to Saddharatana Thera’s behaviour had previously been reported before court and that the judiciary had sought a report on whether he had engaged in insulting conduct towards others.

Dayaratana Thera also remarked that if Saddharatana Thera is suffering from a mental health condition, appropriate treatment should be provided, but stressed that such behaviour should not be allowed to continue unchecked.

He urged authorities to take prompt legal action and impose strict penalties in relation to the matter.
