Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that reopening investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings would amount to a misuse of public funds, arguing that multiple inquiries have already examined the attacks and reached conclusions.

Speaking during a discussion with a group of social media activists, Wickremesinghe noted that several investigation reports are already in existence regarding the coordinated suicide bombings. He said that even international investigative bodies have delivered their findings on the matter.

Referring to the involvement of the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and British intelligence agencies, Wickremesinghe stated that these institutions had indicated there was no further action required in relation to the incident. In that context, he maintained that repeatedly launching new investigations would serve no meaningful purpose.

Wickremesinghe further pointed out that commissions of inquiry have already been appointed within Sri Lanka and that judicial proceedings and related court cases are currently at their final stages.

He questioned the rationale of allocating additional time and public funds for further probes, asserting that such expenditure by the Government should be subject to scrutiny.
