The Government Medical Officers’ Association has launched a 48-hour nationwide token strike from 8:00 a.m. today (9), protesting what it describes as violations of agreed conditions in the allocation of post-graduate internships.
In a statement, the GMOA said the strike was triggered by the Health Ministry proceeding with post-intern doctor appointments despite prior discussions on suspending the transfer process.
The union noted that it had already initiated several trade union actions in response to what it alleged were attempts to politicise the transfer of doctors.
According to the GMOA, a discussion between the union and the Minister of Health had been scheduled for today with the intervention of the President, during which it had been agreed that the transfer list of post-intern doctors would be withheld until the conclusion of the talks.
However, the Health Ministry had moved ahead and published the transfer list, prompting the union to escalate its trade union action.
The GMOA said the strike was intended as a token protest against the decision and called for adherence to previously agreed conditions.
