The National System Operator (NSO) Private Limited has formally requested the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to authorise an additional 15% increase in electricity tariffs. This supplementary proposal, submitted for the second quarter of the year, aims to adjust pricing for the period spanning April to June.
This latest move by the NSO adds further pressure to the energy sector, coming immediately after a significant tariff revision that was implemented on 1.4.2026. In that previous adjustment, the PUCSL approved a weighted increase to address a projected revenue deficit of approximately Rs. 15.8 billion. While domestic consumers using fewer than 30 units saw a marginal 4.3% rise, high-end consumers and industrial sectors were hit much harder, with some categories experiencing hikes as high as 25%.
