Health authorities have urged the public to adhere strictly to safety guidelines aimed at minimising accidents during competitions and events held throughout the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.

The guidelines, issued by the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health, set out precautionary measures for organisers and provide specific recommendations for high-risk activities commonly associated with seasonal festivities.

Authorities have called on event organisers to ensure full compliance with the guidelines when planning and conducting New Year celebrations.

The document further advises that participants in endurance-based events such as village runs, marathons, and cycling races should undergo at least six weeks of prior training, preferably under the supervision of a qualified coach.

It also stresses the importance of establishing a fully equipped first aid centre at event venues, with adequate medical personnel and emergency facilities on standby to respond to potential incidents.
