Two bodies were recovered yesterday (15) afternoon from the Mahaweli River near the Verugal Aru bridge, following a drowning incident involving a father and his four sons.

The group had reportedly gone for a bath on the evening of 14 April when they were caught in strong currents and swept away. The father and one son managed to survive the incident.

Of the three individuals who were initially reported missing, the bodies of two were discovered during search operations carried out yesterday afternoon. The victims were identified as two men aged 35 and 34.

According to initial reports, the four sons—who had been working in Colombo—had returned to their village for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holidays. The incident occurred when they, along with their father, went to bathe in the river.

Search operations are continuing for the remaining missing individual.
