A transformative leap in public transport begins tomorrow (21), as a low-floor priority bus service commences its pilot phase from the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre. Supported by an investment of Rs. 430.7 million under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, the project will be inaugurated under the patronage of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake.
The initial phase introduces ten modern, air-conditioned buses specifically engineered to remove barriers for wheelchair users and other differently abled passengers. These low-floor vehicles are designed for seamless boarding and can accommodate 80 passengers at once, providing 33 seats alongside specialised safety features to protect all commuters. By prioritising ease of access, the service aims to redefine the standard of inclusivity on the country’s roads.
Scheduled to run every 40 minutes during the morning and evening peak periods, the buses will connect Makumbura to both Pettah and Kadawatha. A vital component of the route planning includes direct access to major medical institutions, such as Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and the National Hospital of Colombo.
