A suspect who allegedly posed as the husband of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya’s private secretary in an attempt to secure admission for two students to a leading school in Borella was arrested yesterday (21), the Colombo South Crimes Division said.
The suspect is a 40-year-old resident of Borella.
Police said he had also posed as a Wing Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force and attempted to win the confidence of the school principal by claiming he had performed a parachute jump during the recent Independence Day celebrations.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect had shown the principal AI-generated fake photographs depicting himself with Air Force officers and a woman he claimed was his wife serving as the Prime Minister’s private secretary.
Police further stated that the suspect had claimed that five houses had been allocated to his wife by the Urban Development Authority for distribution among those in need, and had promised to give two of them to the principal while handing over related application forms.
However, after becoming suspicious, the principal had informed the Prime Minister’s Office by letter. Following inquiries, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that no such private secretary existed and lodged a complaint with police.
Police said the suspect had previously served a five-year prison sentence over forged document cases and was linked to around six cases.
He was due to be produced before court, while further investigations are continuing.
