Twenty-two Buddhist monks were arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport after authorities allegedly uncovered a large consignment of narcotics valued at more than Rs. 1.1 billion, according to local media reports.

The arrests were made late on 25 April during a raid conducted by officers attached to the airport unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau, acting on intelligence information.

During the operation, officers reportedly discovered more than 110 kg of suspected “Kush” and hashish concealed inside false-bottomed suitcases. The luggage had also contained school supplies and assorted confectionery items.

Authorities said each suspect had allegedly been carrying more than 5 kg of narcotics in their baggage.

Investigators further claimed that the group had travelled to Thailand on 22 April using airline tickets allegedly provided by a sponsor. Police are also reported to have found photographs and video footage on their mobile phones showing the suspects in civilian clothing while in Thailand.

The seized haul is said to be the largest narcotics detection in the history of Katunayake airport. It is also reportedly the first instance in which a group of monks has been arrested there in connection with a major drug smuggling case.

The suspects are reported to be young monks from various parts of the island, some of whom were pursuing higher education at different institutions.

They were due to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court for further investigations.
