The Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, Ashardeen Moinudeen, has been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 3 million in exchange for awarding a tender to a businessman.
The arrest was made in the Battaramulla area while he was reportedly travelling to accept the bribe.
According to CIABOC officials, Moinudeen had allegedly demanded the payment in return for awarding the tender related to cleaning operations at the Kurunegala Bus Stand and the maintenance of its public toilets.
He had allegedly requested an upfront payment of Rs. 3 million along with a monthly payment of Rs. 500,000 in order to award the tender.
Officials further stated that the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (09).
Moinudeen was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council representing the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC). However, during the formation of the council administration, he had reportedly extended support to the ruling National People’s Power (NPP), following which he was appointed Deputy Mayor.
